It’s an enormously complex business, requiring “extremely robust IT systems,” highly trained information specialists and a nationwide network of warehouses – all run from unpretentious offices just outside downtown Savannah.
“Our business is definitely national,” says Sylvester. “But I choose to live in Savannah for lifestyle reasons.” Born here, he has deep roots. He’s the son of the city’s first African-American school superintendent, and an active member of Congregation B’Nai Brith Jacob. His Jewish faith helps him see the philosophical, and often humorous, side of his intense schedule. “Gam zo l’tovah” (meaning “This, too, is for good”) is one of his favorite responses to challenge.
And he seems to love challenge. Besides being a nationally known CEO, Formey is the enthusiastic chairman and public face of Savannah’s Harbor Pilotage Commission, skilled boat captains who guide huge ships into and out of the port. He’s also vice chairman of the Savannah Airport Commission. In his free time, he captains his own yacht.
One principle propels Formey through his many pursuits: support for minority progress in the 21st-century South. He does not feel alone in his quest. “A lot of people here are working hard to expand opportunity,” he says. “Maybe Savannah’s the new frontier.”
