Workforce

Savannah is the regional hub of an 11-county labor draw area with a population of 652,557 and a labor pool of 330,000+. Our workforce is as diversified as our economy, from software developers to freight handlers.

There are 17 colleges and universities with some 49,000 enrolled students in the Savannah area responsible for cranking out over 6,800 graduates every year in digital media, computer arts, engineering, economics, etc. And, once these grads sample life in Savannah, they rarely want to leave.

Savannah is also fortunate to have a large military population at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Approximately 4,200 of this highly skilled and disciplined workforce transition out of the military and into the civilian labor pool each year. There are also close to 29,000 military dependents, many of whom are willing and able to work.

And, while the unemployment rate in Savannah is consistently lower than the national average, the underemployment rate is high. In 2008, The Pathfinders (Dallas, TX) conducted a Labor Availability Report for the Savannah/Chatham County Labor Shed area. They reported “when staffing a new operation, it is demonstrated that new hires are overwhelmingly from the ranks of the underemployed (people already employed but seeking job upgrades)”. The report therefore focuses on the quantity, demographics and skills/experience of this group of people. The Savannah Labor Shed has a civilian workforce of about 331,100, of which 16,400 are unemployed and 33,000 are underemployed workers.
