Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA)’s Cliff Disi leads Quality Control at the new facility. He understands that building vehicles is only part of the mission at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA). Building people—and the future they represent for the Savannah region—is what

gives the work its meaning.
We asked Cliff a few questions about leadership in honor of Black
History Month.
1. When you look back on your career so far, what
moment made you realize the impact of the work you do on the Savannah region or the people around you?
The moment it really hit me was early on at HMGMA when we started bringing in our first group of Meta Pros. I’ve worked at OEMs, so I understand the multi-generational longevity and economic impact they bring to a region. But seeing those new hires walking in – ready to build something bigger than just a job – made it real. It reminded me that people are the foundation. If we invest in them, develop them, and prepare them to launch the highest quality vehicles, we are not only serving customers – we’re also building a stronger future for families across the Savannah region.
2. What has been one challenge you’ve faced as a leader that isn’t often talked about, and what did it teach you about yourself?
Starting a new plant is a challenge on its own, but one leadership challenge that isn’t talked about enough is developing leaders early – before they’re ‘ready’ on paper. I learned leadership isn’t just promoting people into roles, it’s investing in them, empowering them, coaching them and learning what motivates them
. It’s taught me that my best results come from servant leadership – supporting others so they can succeed and carry the vision forward.
3. Who helped open doors for you along the way, and how has that shaped the way you lead others today?
I’ve had many mentors throughout my career who opened doors for me and helped me shape my leadership style. Troy H. was the first person to see the leadership potential in me and gave me my first r
eal opportunity – he taught me that caring for people is the foundation of strong leadership. Karen C. helped me shift my mindset to focus on strengths rather than weaknesses. Sean S. introduced me to stricter career development and how to build leaders intentionally. Those experiences shaped the way I lead today: I invest in people early, coach them consistently, and create opportunities for growth so they are ready for the next step.
4. What does meaningful leadership look like to you right now and how has that definition changed over time?
Meaningful leadership today is balancing what’s right for the people and what’s right for the business, so we can serve the customer with top quality, fast lead times and low cost – without sacrificing respect for people. My definition has changed over time. I used to think leadership was only about proving yourself through performance and getting results. Now I believe real leadership is building others up, creating stability in chaos and challenging the team to improve while still protecting the culture.
5. Hyundai’s presence has reshaped the region in a major way. What does it mean to you personally to be part of a project that’s creating long-term opportunity at this scale?
Hyundai’s presence is reshaping the Savannah region, and being part of this level of investment is both humbling and motivating. This isn’t just growth – it’s a long-term commitment to people, to inn
ovation and to creating opportunity that can last for decades. For me personally, it means purpose. I’m proud to be part of HMGMA and feel a responsibility to be a strong representative of the company in everything I do. But most importantly, it’s means I have the chance to positively impact lives – helping Meta Pros build meaningful careers while we deliver the quality, speed and value our customers expect.
6. What advice would you give to young people in our region who are interested in manufacturing or advanced industry but may not yet see themselves in those careers?
Don’t count yourself out because you think manufacturing is ‘old’ school.’ It’s not. Today it’s technology, robotics, innovation and teamwork – it’s one of the best places to build a long-term career. There are roles far beyond the production floor, from Quality, IT and engineering to logistics, safety, HR, finance and leadership. And you don’t need a perfect resume to start – you need a strong attitude and willingness to learn. If you are curious, take the leap. The future is being built here in Savannah, and HMGMA can be the place that changes your life. And I’ll tell you what I was told: Stay humble, Stay hungry and be the hardest worker in the room.
